Ussher, James

Ussher, James
(1581–1658)
   Archbishop and Historian.
Ussher was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He was ordained in 1601. He was appointed Professor of Divinity at Dublin in 1607; he became Bishop of Meath in 1621 and Archbishop of Armagh in 1625. After the Irish rebellion of 1641, he lived in England but he did his best to preserve the independence of the Irish Church. He is remembered, however, for his great scholarship. He was the author of many historical works, but he is chiefly known for his Annales Veteris et Novi Testamenti. The dates from this work were printed in many editions of the King James Authorised Version of the Bible.
